Hey all, I'm brand new to this forum and thought maybe there might be people out there with some good advice for me. I just learned that I have BPD a
couple months ago when I had insurance. Well that ended and so now I don't know what to do. I did get depression meds, but I only have enough to last a
couple more and weeks...so I'm freaking out. The other night i just couldn't sleep well at all bc I had so many things going thru my head...I even took
a sleeping pill. I'm so stressed out and my moods are just going all out of whack(well more than usual). I was hoping that someone could give me some good
advice and maybe some good websites to check out. Anything will help, thank you. Jordan

Hi Jordan,
have you gone for a second opinion on your diagnosis? BPD doesn't need to be treated with medication. Cognative therapy is the treatment even though we do suffer from depression at times too. I would be seeking counselling if you can afford it. |

No I haven't, I actually didn't get the depression meds from the same doctor that diagnosed me. I couldn't sleep last night at all so I was doing
some research trying to find out what to do since I don't have much money at all and no insurance. I did find that some therapists to a sliding scale so
hopefully I can find one to go to. Thank god I have a great fiance to help me, even though I'm all over the place, lol. The one main thing I'm scared
about it the depression meds that I am on is called effexor xr and I have been taking it for so long that I am gunna be going thru withdrawals. I tried to get
off it once before and I just couldn't do it.

hello,
i have tried to stop antidepressants in the past and i kept relapsing terribly. i have been without an insurance for 6 years and i have BPD. i used big quantities of omega3 every day, st john's worth, amino acids, calciun and magnesium and gingko biloba and i didnt rellapse for four years. i also added daily exercise (cycling, swimming, whatever i liked doing as long i sweat real good. yoga and meditation for balance and peace) and a healthy diet: no junk food, less fast sugar, more slow sugar(oat bran, wheat,...) very limited time watching tv and replaced much socializing by reading psychology books that talks to my personality and my problems to receive some compassion and to improve my life. by the time you have insurance, you would have held depression at bay for at least a while. i advise you to research all these infos i just passed on to you; then go from there. if you have a doctor, ask him to help you decide how many milligrams of each supplement will be good FOR YOU. omega3: good for depression, lowering cholesterol; memory, concentration; moods. amino acids: especially tyrosene; good for mood swings. calcium and magnesium: good for sleeping and calming. gingkoba improves blood circulation in the brain. i notice that i exercise better and longer when i take it. st john's worth is good for depression. you,re not alone. if you have any questions, i am here. : )

i've been in a state of hypomania for the past 3 years but have not been having any problems to complain of. thank goodness. usually i am severely
clinically depressed for a few years with all the associated symptoms especially a horrid fear and sense of abandonment which causes me to destroy my
interpersonal relations then i go through hypomania for a few years. i take alot of vitamins and supplements and do some of the other things you mentioned and
i believe it has helped me also. i don't take any prescribed meds btw. i'm still a little scared because it seems like it's been a while since i
have been in a bad phase. for a while i thought really i had no disorder, it's just in the past i had gone through some bad stuff but i'm better now,
but i have been diagnosed and i have to face the fact. but i don't want to be the way i was before, it's hell and i feel so happy right now and i
don't want to loose it.

Hi Jordan! I'm sorry to hear about your situation. However, it's very good to see that you're seeking support from others. That is a huge, huge
start. BPD doesn't need to be treated with prescription medicine, although it certainly does help with depression, anxiety, etc. Dialectical Behavior
Therapy would be a good thing to look up. There are many books to read about BPD and different coping approaches. I believe there are even some alternative
medicine routes that are discussed in some. (And google is always a friend!) My overall answer is I don't know what to do about the insurance, but keep
plugged into networks so that you are able to talk to others freely and keep moving toward recovery.

hotaru - don't have any advice on the horrible, uncivilized medical system we have in the states; i am in a foreign country right now, and i can see a
psychiatrist for an HOUR WITH THERAPY for $20 USD. That's makes living here worth while.
BUT I would suggest you look at something called "bipolar ii." It is what I had, but I was being treated with depression; everytime I was put on anti-depressives, I would get better for a while, then I would get really agitated, irritated, and super-angry; I was never closer to suicide then when I was on the anti-depressants. Bipolar II is a weasely disease; the anti-depressant medication has really made it much more obvious. It basically looks like depression / dysthymia, but has an earlier onset. There will be occasional moments of hypomania, with increased activity, but more importantly there will be MIXED states, which is like being depressed and manic at the same time. A mixed state means you are irritable and angry and can go off on people really easily. What makes BPII hard to diagnose is those manic phases are really easy to miss -- they are short lived and not that remarkable; plus, lots of docs don't know too much about it... definitely do your own research, there's one book available on Amazon, and a few websites. BIPOLAR I (one) is completely different, so make sure you are reading material directed toward bipolar II. And, basically, the first line of treatment for BPII is a mood stabilizer. Once you have a stable mood (for me, it was a persistent blah feeling), you can start some anti-depressants. ALSO... I would recommend looking into some online pharmacy sites. I have had good experiences, and I read a wonderful review by the Customs making a lot of noise about how the drugs people received were not shipped from the country people thought they were; if that's the WORST that CUSTOMS officials can make after interdicting 500 packages, then I will take my enormous discount, thank you very much. |
